Rippey Lions Club:

The Rippey Lions Club enjoyed a meal prepared and served by Mary Hick and Brenda Roberts at its recent meeting. The group decided to continue to be a sponsor for the BRR Ride (Bike Ride to Rippey) in February of 2016. Nancy Hanaman will contact the Perry Chamber of Commerce to let them know. She will also distribute the new Rippey Lions Club brochures to local businesses. Rick Liebich worked on these brochures to share with anyone in the community and prospective members. It was decided to postpone the spaghetti dinner from November to early in 2016. The next regular meeting will be Nov. 5 with a potluck. Harlan Den Beste will introduce Larry Vodenik, Perry, who will share about Perry history.

Following the business meeting, Liebich introduced the guest speaker Willie Klein, advance specialist with the Iowa State Extension, who shared briefly about her connection with the World Prize meeting currently being held in Des Moines and about the Iowa Food Hunger Day at which food insecurity in Iowa was discussed.

The main part of her presentation included her experiences with the annual Britt Hobo Convention over the years. The 115th annual event will be in August of 2016 and has changed over the years as fewer hobos travel by train. She shared her experience as part of the planning committee and about getting to know the hobos, including Songbird and Iowa Blackie. She shared letters she had received from hobos and their family members. Hobos and those attending the Hobo Convention come from all over the country. Mulligan stew, prepared by Britt residents is served to any who comes to the convention bringing a bowl. The annual event includes a parade, crowning a king, storytelling sessions around a campfire, singing and other events over the four days. There is a hobo museum in Britt that Klein helped organize.  For more information about the annual convention and the museum, go to www.hobo.com.

News in and around Rippey:

Recent visitors in Connie Neese’s home were Margaret Johnson of Lynn Center, IL and her daughter Barbara Anthony of Ellsworth, IL. The ladies are cousins and the two older ladies spent their early years in Minnesota playing on their grandpa’s farm. Barbara and her husband are ministers and run a thrift shop for their church. There are no prices marked on any item. They also run a breakfast program and a noon meal they are expanding. This is their fourth year based on donations only. The visit time was too short.

Connie Neese took a bus trip to Lucas County, enjoying Lake Rathbun and Honey Creek resort. Highlights of the trip were the fall colors, the ISU solar house, Hy-Vee distribution center, and Pipers Chocolate’s, featuring handmade chocolates. The business has been operating for more than 100 years. One former owner is 83 and works very day. Lunch was in an old refurbished school house that was turned into a tea room, and there are plans to make the upper story a bed and breakfast. A cruise on the lake in the J and K houseboat was enjoyed. The boat’s owner and skipper has been part of the very first plans for the lake and gave an interesting history of the development. He also has a meat market and catering business and the group enjoyed his homemade food. Food seemed to be a big part of the trip.

Maddie Bardole, niece of Nancy and Dale Hanaman, a junior volleyball player for Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, broke the school record for kills on Oct 16 with a career total of 1,335, surpassing the old record of 1,312. Nancy and Dale attended her recent game against Martin Luther College in Storm Lake.
